MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Elisha McCallion says the return of the City of Derry Drama Festival is testament to the city’s commitment and love for the arts.
Speaking ahead of the start of the festival this Friday, March 4, the Mayor said the City of Derry Drama Festival celebrates everything that is good about amateur drama.
“The festival is a fantastic showcase for visiting talent and the Waterside Theatre is the perfect location for theatre lovers across the North West region to experience a varied range of dramatic productions on their doorstep.
“I am delighted that the festival is back after a short break to secure funding and hope it will be another huge success.”
She added that the City of Derry Drama Festival is now in its 35th year and is one of the city and district’s key social and cultural events in our annual events calendar.
“Each year the festival seems to grow in terms of audience numbers and drama group participation.
“I am always particularly impressed by the wide range of drama genres that are included in the programme and how every audience is catered for.
“A lot of work has gone into organizing this event and would like to acknowledge the role played by the committee for putting the programme together and working to keep drama alive in the local community,” she said.
She added that Derry City and Strabane District Council is pleased to be associated with the City of Drama Festival, recognising the important role it plays in showcasing local and visiting talent and providing top quality productions to audiences in the North West.
Among the highlights of the festival include Butt Drama Circle’s adaption of the late Brian Friel classic Translations on Friday, 04 March; the Pomeroy Players’ adaption of High Leonard’s Da on Wednesday 10 March and Colgreany Players presenting Frank McGuinness’ Greta Garbo Came to Donegal on Saturday 12 March.
