
Veteran civil right activist Paddy ‘Bogside’ Doherty who died in January
THERE has been at the death of Eileen Doherty, wife of the late great Paddy “Bogside” Doherty, just a month after he died.
Paddy Doherty, who was a veteran civil rights activist, died during the first week of January.
Mrs Doherty passed away peacefully at her Bogside home yesterday morning after a long illness.
Her funeral will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, March 1.
Mrs Doherty’s remains will leave her Westland Street home at 9.20 am for 10.00 am Requiem Mass in St Eugene’s Cathedral.
Following Requiem Mass, she will be laid to rest alongside her later husband in the City Cemetery.
Predeceased by her daughter Doreen, she is survived by her sons John, Hugh, Declan, Kieran, Kevin and Brendan, and daughters Roisin, Eileen, Kathleen, Paddyann, Fiona and Nuala.
She is also survived by 43 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Paddy Doherty, who was born in 1926, died at the start of January following a lengthy battle against illness.
As vice-chairman of the Derry Citizen Defence Association, Mr Doherty played a major role in the events of August 1969 which culminated in the Battle of the Bogside.
Paddy was also a leading figure in Free Derry in the years after it was set up.
