DERRY City went down 2-1 to Finn Harps tonight in Ballybofey.
The scoreline was 2-0 until prodigal son Rory Patterson pulled one back late on to spare the Candystripes blushes in the opening game of the 2016/17 SSE Airtricity Premiership league.
Finn Harps recorded their first league win over Derry City in 18 years.
Goals from Dave Scully and Ryan Curran ensured a famous win for Ollie Horgan’s men.
But it was not a good start of Derry City manager Kenny Shiels who was hoping to come away with either a win or a point, but not a defeat.
Fans believe the team is still short of four players to give them a fighting chance of staying out of the relegation zone.
Derry started brightly and had two decent chances through Jordan Allan and Gareth McGlynn.
However, as the game wore on Harps settled into it, but both teams were cancelling each other and chances were at a premium.
The turning point came right on the stroke of half-time, Conor McCormack fouled Dave Scully.
From the resulting free-kick Scully got on the end of it and powered his header past Gerard Doherty.
With the pitch making life difficult for both sides, there was very little created by either side and the second half was a very scrappy affair.
However, Harps got the crucial second goal on the 75th minute.
Curran beat the offside trap and finished superbly.
Rory Patterson pulled one back in stoppage but it was too little too late and the Harps recorded a famous victory and the Candystripes recorded a not so memorable defeat.
