SINN Féin Councillor Paul Fleming has welcomed a new initiative by Derry City and Strabane District Council and try cut the amount of dog fouling.
The “Live Here Love Here” initiative which will give communities the opportunity to introduce some exciting and innovative methods in a bid to reduce litter and dog fouling in areas across the city.
Residents across the city regularly complain at the amount of dog fouling which owners refuse to clean.
Some even refer to it as ‘Derry Shitty’ such is the level of dog fouling on streets in the city.
Councillor Fleming said: “As councillors we receive complaints about dog fouling and littering on a daily basis.
“As well as being a health hazard it also costs the local council thousands of pounds of rate payers money cleaning up what is essentially someone else’s mess.
So any initiative that helps in some small way stopping this is to be welcomed.
“Through the Combating Litter in Your Community Project the council aims to recruit some forward thinking community groups, volunteers, schools and businesses who would like to try out some innovative litter combating methods in their local community.
“Group participating will be provided with all the equipment, information and support needed to implement the project,” he added.
