SINN Fein politicians have been inadvertently caught up in the Brussels terror attacks this morning which have killed up to 27 people and injured scores more.
A delegation of Sinn Fein representatives, including MLA Megan Fearon and MEP Martin Anderson, had been on its way to Brussels when their plane was diverted.
The first bomb went off at an airport at 7 am near the departure area of the American Airlines desk.
One hour later a suicide bomber detonated a device at Maelbeek metro station.
Ms Anderson tweeted: “Delegation going to Brussels from North is still in England – all safe & sound – thoughts & prayers with those injured in Brussels airport
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said his thoughts and prayers are with the victims and survivors.
“This morning’s attacks on people at airport and metro stations in Brussels are deplorable and I condemn them unreservedly,” he said.
“I have been in contact with Sinn Féin representatives and staff travelling to and in Brussels this morning to express my concern and I now want to extend solidarity and support to the people of Brussels at this awful time.
“My thoughts, as with everyone in Ireland at this time, will be with those killed or injured.”
SDLP Colum Eastwood tweeted: “Terrible news from Brussels.
“We know, only too well, the horror of indiscriminate bombs. God bless all those there.”
