THE BISHOP of Derry Donal McKeown has this evening clarified why no Requeim Mass is being celebrated for the five victims of the Buncrana pier tragedy.
Many people have taken to Facebook to ask why their is no Requiem Mass and if not, why the rules cannot be changed for such a terrible tragedy.
Only a funeral service with a liturgy ready will be held for the McGrotty and Daniels who perished on Sunday.
In a message this evening, Bishop McKeown said: “These have been grief-stricken days for so many people, after the horrors of what happened at Buncrana Pier last Sunday night.
“Neighbours, parish, friends and the wider community have shown great solidarity with Louise and all those traumatised by such loss.
“The funeral service for the five deceased takes place tomorrow at Holy Family Church (2pm).
“Just in case anyone is asking, it will be a funeral service – with the Mass at a later stage – because on Holy Thursday, everywhere in the Catholic world there is only one morning Mass in each diocese (in the Cathedral) and one evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper in each Church.
“On Good Friday and Holy Saturday no Mass is celebrated anywhere until the Easter Vigil after nightfall.
“Even the Pope would not get a funeral Mass on any of these three days – Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday!
“Remember everybody involved in your prayers,” added Bishop McKeown.
