AN Irish tabloid newspaper has printed an apology to the family of the victims of the Buncrana pier tragedy over a fake interview with mum Louise James.
The Irish Mail on Sunday published the apology on page two of their newspaper today after wrongfully quoting Louise James.
Ms James lost her partner Sean McGrotty, her mum Ruth Daniels, 57, sister Jodie-Lee Daniels, 14, and her two sons Mark, 11 and Evan, eight when their Audi Q7 4 X 4 slid off the pier in Buncrana and sank in Lough Swilly a fortnight ago today, March 20.
The apology stated: “Last Sunday we published an article quoting from Louise James, who had lost her partner, mother, sister and two sons in the Buncrana tragedy.
“We wish to make clear that Louise understood that she was speaking to our reporter in a purely private capacity and had not consented to being interviewed.
“She did not wish to give interviews to any media outlets.
“We are happy to make this clear and to apologise to Louise and her family for the upset caused.”
The bogus interview was a clear breach of a request by the family for the media to respect their privacy.
It is understood the family were “very unhappy” to read the alleged interview in the Irish Mail on Sunday last weekend.
