STAFF from Fujitsu in Derry recently took up the challenge to ‘Be a Saint’ for a day and rolled up their sleeves volunteering their time to help spruce up the gardens at Spruce House.
The small group of volunteers spent a day providing some much-needed attention to the gardens closely surrounding Spruce House at Altnagelvin: digging, weeding, bagging, sweeping and tidying.
Sister Claire Larkin from Spruce House explains how this small volunteering project has made a real impact on our patients’ experience:
“Patients at Spruce House can often be highly dependent with reduced mobility.
“Others are in Spruce for a short stay, so a maintained garden area provides a quiet, relaxing and uplifting space for them to enjoy.
“The volunteers paid particular attention to our sensory garden at the back of our unit, planting spring flowers in our raised beds and bringing the garden back to its full glory.
“Many of our patients have physiotherapy in our multi-therapy room which looks out onto the sensory garden so I know they will appreciate the work this wonderful group of volunteers have undertaken.
“On behalf of the staff, patients and visitors who will all benefit from the newly revamped gardens, we are very grateful to these volunteers for their time, energy and achievements.”
Western Trust Volunteer Manager Anne Love added:
“The volunteers from Fujitsu are an example of how volunteering a few hours to the local community will make a lasting positive impact for patients, visitors and staff.”
