SINN Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the news that Derry City & Strabane District Council has called for Derry man Tony Taylor’s immediate release.
He has also raised concerns over his human rights.
Tony Taylor had his release licence revoked and he was returned to prison last month on the orders of Secretary of State Theresa Villiers.
It is claimed she made the decision following intelligence provided by the British Security Service, MI5.
But his family and campaigners have called for any intelligence to be produced in open court so it can be challenged.
They say that if it is not produced in open court, then he should be freed from Maghaberry jail where he is currently being held.
He received a seven year prison sentence for possession of a firearm, with three years to be spent in custody and the remaining four on licence.
A motion to the council this week, proposed by independent councillor Gary Donnelly, was supported by Sinn Fein and the SDLP.
East Derry MP Gregory Campbell condemned the motion.
Raymond McCartney said: “I welcome news the council has called for the immediate release of Tony Taylor.
“The continued use of unjust powers by the British government to revoke a person’s license without producing any evidence of wrongdoing is an affront to human rights and natural justice.”
