DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team are quizzing two men who had been previously arrested over the brutal sectarian murder of Paul McCauley in Derry.
The suspects – aged 27 and 28, were arrested last year by MIT detectives and were released on police bail pending further inquiries.
They are now in custody at Strand Road PSNI station being questioned following receipt of further information by the inquiry team.
Earlier today, a court granted applications for warrants of further detention for both men.
Paul McCauley died last June in a care facility almost nine years after an attack in July 2006.
At the time of his death Paul was aged 38.
The father was attending a summer BBQ at a house in the Chapel Road area of Derry’s Waterside in July 2006 when he and two friends were attacked by a loyalist mob.
The attackers – who were mainly in their teens – then fled after the horrific assault towards Irish Street.
Police believe the motive for the attack was sectarian.
The senior investigating officer in the murder probe, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey, said today: “This investigative activity brings the number of detentions since Paul’s death last year to 16.
“One person has been charged with murder and another individual has been reported to the public prosecution service.
“We said after Paul died that this investigation would take on a renewed momentum and this momentum is continuing.
“Detectives are available to speak with anyone who decides they want to talk to us.
“Even after almost 10 years, it is not too late to do the right thing and come forward.
“Anyone with information about the attack and its tragic outcome can speak to detectives on the non-emergency number 101,” added DCI Harvey.
