THERE is sadness in Irish footballing circles over the death of former Derry City striker Garry Jones following a battle against cancer.
The ex-Bolton Wanderers centre-forward played six times for the Candy Stripes.
He netted twice in City’s first game in the League of Ireland in their 3-1 win over Home Farm, way back in 1985.
The 65-year-old spent most of his career playing centre-forward with Bolton Wanderers, and scored 55 goals with the club during his 236 match record from 1968 to 1975.
One of the highlights of his career came in October 1971, when he netted a hatrick in Bolton’s victory over Manchester City in the League Cup.
After his stint with the Wanderers, Jones played six times for the Candy Stripes.
Garry also played with Los Angeles Aztecs, Blackpool, Sheffield United, Hereford United, and Runcorn.
The father-of-three passed away earlier this week surrounded by his family.
