POLICE in Derry are raising the public’s awareness to thieves posing as ‘cold callers’ to homes to steal cash and valuables or just simply rip people off.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Sadly, police too often hear about a callers who are not who they claim to be.
“They will use all sorts of pretences – the Water Board; the Post Office; the Housing Executive; even the Police – but they are all bogus.
“For some, the aim is to trick their way into your home and steal money or valuables.
“For others, the aim is to persuade you that they can do work about your house – clear the gutters; power wash the yard or clean the roof – and maybe they will do it, but for an inflated price.
“We will be working to raise awareness and to show doorstep crime the door.
“Our advice is simple: Do not let anyone into your home unless you know who they are, or they can prove their identity.”
