AN ONLINE campaign has so far raised £3,800 to bring home Sister Clare Theresa Crockett who tragically died in Saturday’s massive earthquake which rocked Ecuador.
Sister Clare, 33, was leading young people to safety down a staircase when it collapsed under the force of the earthquake which had a magnitude of 7.8.
She was much loved by sisters in the Home of The Mother Order and also by friends, family and former classmates in Derry.
Sister Clare had wanted to be an actress before she decided to join the religious order following pilgrimages to Spain and Italy when she was 18.
The Crowdfunding page, set up yesterday by Sinead Johnston, had originally asked for help in raising £3,000.
But today the total has exceeded all expectations as £3,800 has now been donated.
Sinead wrote: “Clare is a lovely Derry girl from the Brandywell area who found her calling at 18 years of age and has selflessly dedicated her life to helping others ever since.
“There was a major earthquake in Ecuador.
“The roof of the Sisters house in Playa Prieta, where Clare taught in collapsed, and Clare tragically lost her life whilst selflessly trying to lead three candidates to safety.
“Unfortunately, at this sad time the family is faced with the ordeal of having to pay to get Clare’s body home to where she belongs.
“Clare would have done anything to help anyone and we would be forever grateful if you could help Clare’s family at this difficult time by making a donation to help with the costs.”
Well done to Sinead for setting up the page and to all who have kindly donated to bring Sister Clare back home to her sorrowing family.
