DERRY City returned to winning ways last night after two first-half goals from home town boy Nathan Boyle in the second round of the EA Sports Cup.
After a disappointing 1-1 draw at the weekend away to Longford town in the SSE Airtricity Premiership, the Candy Stripes had in the end a comfortable victory over struggling Sligo Rovers.
It means Derry City have had seven wins out of the last eight games in all competitions.
Boyle put Derry ahead on 34 minutes after being set up by defender Niclas Vemmelund.
And he got his brace in first-half injury-time after connecting with a flick on from Ronan Curtis.
The biggest cheer of the night at the Brandywell came when Josh Daniels.
He was introduced as a second-half substitute following the death of his mum and sister in last month’s Buncrana tragedy along with brother-in-law Sean McGrotty and his two young sons.#
Kenny Shiels rested a number of his first team regulars ahead of Friday night’s league encounter at the Brandywell against Bohemians
He handed full debuts to Conor McDermott and Patrick McClean.
