RURAL crime is big business for travelling criminals.

Local thieves along with organised criminals use the remoteness to target shops, petrol stations, and farms for cash, jewellery and machinery.

There is a huge black market trade in expensive farm machinery such as tractors and combine harvesters.

Rural shops in Co Derry , which provide a vital service to the local community, are also vulnerable to attack from robbers.

As part of rural crime prevention month, local police officers have been visiting post offices throughout the district. T

Local community police yesterday visited Tullyhogue, where we spoke to Post Office staff and members of the community regarding crime prevention.

If the public see any strange vehicles acting suspiciously near rural shops or farms report them immediately to police on the 101 number.
