VETERAN socialist Eamonn McCann has become the fly in the ointment in Foyle and looks set to take a seat off the SDLP and get elected to the Asssembly.
At 73, he has been described as the ‘Bernie Saunder’s’ of politics by taking on the SDLP and Sinn Fein big guns and snatching a seat from them.
While Martin McGuinness topped the poll, McCann – the People Before Profit candidate – is now being tipped to take a seat after nearly 50 years as a civil rights activist and socialist.
It will be a blow to new SDLP leader Colum Eastwood who was hoping to stave off Sinn Fein but he looks set to lose Gerry Diver.
The new constituency will see either Raymond McCartney of Maeve McCartney of Sinn Fein possibly being casualties as a result of McGuinness being parachuted in to take on the SDLP.
They are in a vote dog fight for the sixth and crucial seat.
Eastwood is expected to be joined by party colleague Mark H Durkan at the Assembly.
The DUP’s Gary Middleton is also expected to be returned.
