AN emotional round of applause broke out for former Glenavon striker Mark Farren at yesterday’s Irish Cup final.
Fans from both Glenavon and Linfield stood up at Windsor Park on the 10th minute in memory of Mark who wore the number ten shirt for the Lurgan blues.
His widow Terri-Louise led the Gkenavon team out for the Tennents Irish Cup final following an invitation from the club.
Two years previously, Mark had led the team out for the final when they beat Ballymena United.
Tragically, Mark died in February this year after a brave battle against an aggressive brain cancer.
Glenavon ran out 2-0 winners yesterday with goals either side of the half from Kevin Braniff and Andy Hall.
At the end of yesterday’s game, all the Glenavon players, including player manager Gary Hamilton, wore No 10 shirts in memory of Mark.
The Lurgan blues unfurled a banner which read: MARK, YOUR COURAGE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN – BE JUST AND FEAR NOT.
And around the ground, Glenavon fans sang at the top of their voices: ‘There’ Only One Mark Farren……..”
Terri-Louise was made to feel very much part of Glenavon’s day and win. After the team was presented the trophy, she was invited to stand in front of the banner holding up the Irish Cup.
BBC NI Sports commentator Jackie Fullerton, who bowed out yesterday after covering his last Irish Cup Final, said: “Terri-Louise came to the ground today on the Glenavon coach and was made to feel part of things and that was only right.
“That was a lovely touch by Glenavon and manager Gary Hamilton to let Terri-Louise to lead the team out.
“She will remember this day and sadly she will also remember her late husband.
“I didn’t know Mark that well but he was a great fella and a record goal scorer for Derry City.”
