AFTER almost 50 years of trying, Eamonn McCann has finally signed on…..as an elected politician.
The Foyle MLA for the People Before Profit registered in the Assembly today on the opening day of business for all elected members.
Smartly dressed for the occasion, Eamonn, who is designate leader of the PBP, was joined by party colleague Gerry Carroll who topped the poll in the Sinn Fein heartland of west Belfast.
But the 73-year-old socialist, journalist and trade unionist doesn’t have to wear a tie after the outgoing Assembly speaker Mitchel McLaughin announced that it was not requisite apparel for male MLAs so long as they appeared in the chamber “smartly dressed”.
One of the first things on Eamonn’s agenda is the Translink train service between Derry and Belfast.
He revealed on Monday that to get to the Assembly on time he would have had to get up at 6 am to use his free travel card.
He says he will be raising the lack of timetable servicing on the route between the North’s two main cities for commuters when the new minister is appoointed.
