SINN Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has met with staff of the Stepping Stones Crèche at the Ulster University, Coleraine and student union representatives to discuss concerns the crèche will be forced to move off campus.
Following the meeting Caoimhe Archibald said: “The on-campus crèche provides a very important, high-quality service for both staff and students.
“More importantly, however, is the opportunity it provides for students to access flexible childcare on a part-time or term-time basis without the retainers other service providers require.
“This can be a game-changer in terms of affordability for students on a limited income or those returning to education later in life, particularly single parents.
“The staff and Student Union are very concerned at the impact moving off campus will have on those who rely on the service.
“The university has cited that the crèche building is not fit for purpose and this is acknowledged by crèche staff.
“They would, however, like to explore options to remain on campus and the university should work with them on this.”
