FORMER Mayor of Derry Sinn Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell has said it is time to extend marriage equality across Ireland.
He said: “On May 23, 2015 the people of Ireland made history by voting for marriage equality in a referendum.
“1,201,607 people voted to make love the law and since then more than 400 couples got married since the law has been changed.
“The people made a clear choice to vote for equality for all.
“In the north of Ireland, however, we do not have marriage equality and many couples are denied the right to marry simply because they are gay.
“That is unacceptable.
“Sinn Féin have been to the fore in promoting equality and that is why we have brought forward legislation to extend marriage equality across Ireland as one of our first acts in the new Assembly.
“There is nothing to fear from equality.
“I hope we will see the support of all parties so that we can end this discrimination,” added Cllr Campbell.
