A BOOZE ban will be in force for soccer fans in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area intending to watch the Northern Ireland or Republic of Ireland Euro matches on the Big Screen in Derry’s Waterloo Place.
The council have this afternoon advised that the area is a family-friendly zone and no alcohol will be permitted.
Yesterday, elected members of Council agreed to proceed with screening the remainder of the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland on the Big Screen.
Because of the timelines involved it is therefore anticipated that the first match to be shown will be Saturday afternoon’s Republic of Ireland game at 2pm.
The Council spokesperson said it was important to note that no “Fanzone-type” facilities will be in place as the Big Screen is located within a busy retail area that is governed by no alcohol byelaws.
“The Council is currently arranging to screen all of the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland matches but no provision is being made to provide additional facilities such as seating or catering.
“The Big Screen is located in the heart of the city centre in a busy retail area where strict no alcohol byelaw enforcement is in place.
“The area will however be stewarded to ensure it’s a family friendly and safe environment for fans to enjoy the occasion.”
The spokesperson concluded that the screening and security around this will be reviewed and monitored on an ongoing basis.
