SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA has expressed his sympathy to the Labour Party and the family of Jo Cox who died today after being shot and stabbed in Birstall, Leeds.
The mother of two is the British MP to be murdered in 26 years, the last to be killed was Ian Gow by the IRA in 1990.
Mrs Cox, aged 41, was shot and stabbed as she headed to hold her MP’s surgery.
Tommy Mair, aged 52, was later arrested by police and is currently being questioned about the callous murder.
Colum Eastwood said: “It is with heartfelt sorrow that I send my condolences and those of the SDLP to the family and friends of Jo Cox.
“Our thoughts are also with her constituents and the Labour Party whom she served with such dedication. They will all be in our prayers on this terrible day.
“The shadow of violence has once again been cast over democracy today.
“But it is the spirit, the passion and the unimpeachable character of people like Jo and her husband Brendan that makes us stronger than those who carry out this kind of brutality.”
