SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called for international solidarity to tackle the world’s growing refugee crisis.
Speaking on World Refugee Day, Ms Anderson said:
“No one can have failed to have been moved by the images of refugees fleeing conflict and persecution and conflict around the world.
“As an MEP I have travelled to refugee camps in Jordan and visited refugees in Lampedusa and their stories are heartbreaking.
“These people are not just statistics; they are fathers, mothers, sons and daughters.
“Today on World Refugee Day I am calling for a demonstration of international solidarity to tackle the global refugee crisis.
“The international community, and the EU in particular, must step up its efforts to stop conflict, and protect those fleeing persecution.
“We also need action to stop intimidation and offensive attitudes and behaviour against those who come here seeking shelter and protection.”
