That’s how Creggan’s James McClean has summed his team’s exit from the Euro finals in France and also how proud he was to play for his country at such a major tournament.

And he didn’t forget the thousands of Irish fans who travelled to France to cher on

The brave Irish lads went down fighting to the end but just could not get the equaliser as tournament hosts France ran out 2-1 winners.

It was McClean’s second start in the Euros after getting the call to face Italy last week when a Robbie Brady header on 85 minutes book the Republic’s place in the last 16 setting up an encounter against France.

After that win the former Derry City player said he was driven by the “love for this country, for those fans, for ourselves and for our families”

Now the West Brom Premier League player has expressed his gratitude to the fans on social media for their brilliant contribution to the boys in green.

In a post on his Instagram page, James wrote: Devastated and heartbroken right now!

“So close! So honoured and proud to be a part of this amazing team.

“We gave it our all, its been a great journey!

“Are fans are easily bar far the best there is!

“Thank you for support yous are a credit.”

With senior players expected to retire from international duty in the aftermath of Euro 2016, it’s very likely that McClean will be one of the more experienced members of the squad when Ireland begin their campaign to reach  World Cup 2018.

His passion, dedication and skill will undoubtedly be needed by Martin O’Neill and McClean is more than ready to pull on that green jersey once again.
