POLICE in Derry are appealing for information following an arson attack at the derelict Immaculate Conception college in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The gym hall at the disused premises on Waterside’s Trench Road was gutted in the blaze.
Around 25 firefighters tackled the inferno which started around 4.30 am.
Appealing for information, Investigating Officer Constable Martin said: “ The fire was reported to police at around 4.40am and is believed to have been started deliberately.
“Due to the extensive damage caused to the building following the fire, the property has now been demolished.
“ I am appealing for anyone with any information which could assist the police investigation to contact Strand Road Police Station on 101 quoting reference number 161 06/07/2016.
“Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111..”
Local politicians have blamed gangs of roaming teenage youths for causing damage to the former school.
Sinn Fein councillor Christopher Jackson said: “There have been a number of incidents at this site over the past two weeks. A number of attempts have been made to set the old building on fire.
“Tools have also been stolen from the site.
“I have been on the ground each night with local community workers trying to prevent this carry on.
“A lot of this is being carried out by a very small group aged no more than 14-15yrs old.
“This is the last thing this area needs, a lot of people are working very hard to put on positive community summer schemes for our young people.”
