POLICE have confirmed that a two-year-old child who had been left critical injured following an accident this afternoon in Derry has tragically died.
The little was knocked down near the Brandywell football stadium.
The infant has rushed by ambulance to the emergency department at Altnagelvin Hospital.
But despite the valiant efforts of medical staff, they were unable to save the child’s young life.
As a result, police have ave closed the Lone Moor Road in both directions.
The road is closed at its junctions with Brandywell Road and Southway following a serious road traffic collision.
Diversions are in place.
The collision occurred at around 1.15 pm and involved a silver coloured Citroen Picasso car.
The driver of the car has been spoken to by police and enquiries are currently ongoing.
Inspector David McIlwaine has appealed to anyone who witnessed the collision or who has any information which could assist police with their enquiries to contact Strand Road on 101.
Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue said the community was “in shock” over the child’s death.
She added: “I want to express my sympathy to the family and friends of this young boy.
“It is a tragic and very personal loss for them.
“They are in our thoughts and prayers at this time, as they are trying to come to terms with such dreadful news.”
