DERRY City suffered a shock defeat on Monday night after losing 1-0 to Limerick at the Brandywell.
The Candy Stripes hopes of reaching the final of the EA Sports Cup were dashed on as Limerick caused an unexpected upset.
Kenny Shiels’s team went into the game as in form favourites.
But they found their First Division opponents had come with a fighting spirit and who were also hard to break down.
The winning goal of the semi-final tie came on 15 minutes with Stephen Kenny firing past Ger Doherty in the home goal.
The Candy Stripes tried to up their game and claw back an equaliser but were unable to find a way past the well the steely and organised Limerick defence.
The blue shirts, who lead the First Division, almost bagged a second goal only to be denied by Doherty who made a fine double save.
Derry City piled on the pressure towards the end with efforts from Rory Patterson and Josh Daniels.
But in the end it was a disappoint end to a cup run.
Next up for Derry City is SSE Airtricity Premier league action this Friday, August 6 when they host St Pat’s Athletic at the Brandywell.
