THERE are plans for a major upgrade in the CCTV security system in Derry City Centre.
City Centre manager Jim Roddy says the upgrade would help protect and keep people safe.
He added that new hi-tech system will also be able to detect crime and alert police to any ongoing situations.
The emergency agencies including some homeless charities are now working together in the 24/7 operation.
It will also be invaluable in helping to save lives of those vulnerable adolescents and adults who contemplate ending their own lives.
Pat Carlin from Foyle Search and Rescue – which patrols the Foyle wateways – says it will be an invaluable resource along the riverfront and bridges.
But some don’t think the new system goes far enough.
Alex Curry, a door supervisor of 15 years in the city centre believes the upgrade would be a great opportunity to introduce a new system.
“Derry needs a functional pub watch scheme where all city centre pubs are linked via radio to the CCTV control room who store images and footage of people who have been involved in drug use, dealing or violence,” said Alex on Facebook
“Pubs should also have access to a database of images from previous incidents on individual pub bans of unsavoury elements connecting everyone under the one ideology of a safer night time economy.
“Every other large city has one. Why not Derry?”
