IT finished honours even at the Brandywell this evening.
Rory Patterson opened the scoring on 11 minutes.
The goal was just what the manager Kenny Shiels had ordered in his pre-match team talk after Monday night’s defeat to Limerick in the EA Cup semi-final.
But Kevin Treacey cancelled out Patterson’s opener with a goal on 23 minutes.
Kenny Shiels put together a make shift defence which looked a bit shaky in the first half.
In the second half St Pat’s had the better of the chances but the Dubliners weren’t able to capitalise.
Barry McNamee and Patterson had a few chances but watched them either go wide or into the arms of the St Pat’s keeper Brendan Clarke.
In the end it was probably a fair result for both sides.
Shiels would have preferred three points but the score draw takes his side to within one point of second placed Cork.
But Cork have three games in hand.
Shamrock Rovers move to within a point of The Candy Stripes after after their 2-1 win over Longford town.
But the shock of the night was league leaders Dundalk going down 1-0 to Galway Utd.
Next up for Derry is an away tie to North West rivals Finn Harps.
Kenny Shiels will be hoping that Harps poor run of recent form will continue.
Tonight, Harps lost 2-0 in an away game Bohemians – their third straight defeat.
