THE funeral of retired Bishop Edward Daly of Derry will take place today.

Thousands of people from across Derry and further afield are expected to turn out to pay their respects to the Most Reverend Daly..

He had been ill in hospital and died on Monday aged 82.

The service will take place at St Eugene’s Cathedral in Londonderry at 3.30 pm.

Then Fr Daly was a curate at the cathedral on Bloody Sunday, 30 January 1972, having been a priest in the city since 1962.

He was appointed Bishop of Derry in 1974.

Bishop Daly’s remains were taken to the cathedral on Monday evening, where prayers were said ahead of the funeral.

He was forced into full retirement in 1994 after he suffered a stroke, but he continued in the role of chaplain to Derry’s Foyle Hospice until February 2016.

People wishing to attend the service should park away from the cathedral grounds, advised the parish’s Fr Paul Farren.

“Because Bishop Daly has chosen to be buried in the grounds, which we’re so happy about, we have to keep the grounds clear so there’ll be very few cars on the grounds,” said Fr Farren.

“We’ll be asking people to park away from the cathedral and come any time from 2.30 pm onwards.

“We’ll try to get as many people seated as possible so that we can all join together in this prayerful celebration of his life.”

The bishop received the Freedom of the City of Derry in 2015.
