POLICE have released details of a rioting following a security alert in the centre of Derry last night.
The PSNI say officers attended the scene of a security alert following the discovery of a suspicious object in Butcher Street at Butcher Gate.
A spokesperson said: “Army Technical Officers attended and following a controlled explosion declared the object to be an elaborate hoax.
“During the clearance operation, a number of fireworks and 25 petrol bombs were thrown at police in the Fahan Street area of the city.
“It was reported that the windscreen in a van parked in Fahan Street was smashed shortly after midnight.
“There were no injuries and the operation ended shortly before 2.30 am this morning.”
Police will be reviewing CCTV footage in a bid to identify those involved in the rioting.
