EXCITEMENT is building in the run-up to this year’s Waterside Half Marathon (WHM) with a final call for competitors to register ahead of the deadline for online entries at midnight today, Monday, August 15.
Derry City and Strabane District Council, organisers of the popular annual event which is now in its 35th year, have had a great level of interest to date, with the new route introduced last year leaving from Ebrington Square proving highly popular with participants.
Liz Cunningham, Events Officer with the Council, said:
“We’ve had extremely positive feedback about the new route which was introduced in 2015, and this year’s course will once again take runners across the river to the city side, showcasing our parks, greenways and bridges before finishing at St Columb’s Park.
“We are delighted with the level of entries registered to date, with many of the competitors taking on the challenge for the first time, while a number of participants are taking part to raise public awareness and much-needed funds for their chosen charities.
“With entries available for Half Marathon Runners/Wheelchairs, and the 3-Person Team Relay we would encourage competitors of all abilities from age 17 upwards to take part in the North West’s most popular road race.
“Budding younger athletes and those looking for a less challenging run are invited to take part 2k Family Fun Run.
“Entries will be accepted up until midnight on Monday, August 15th so if you fancy a challenge, make sure to register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”
Among the well-known local athletes to look out for on September 4th, Catherine Whoriskey of City of Derry Spartans who clinched silver in the Dublin Half Marathon last weekend, is keen to defend her WHM 2015 female title on home ground.
Kenyan Freddy Sittuk, runner-up last year to Mick Clohissey who is currently in Rio preparing for the Olympic marathon, has indicated he intends to be on the Waterside start line again this year and has been back in Ireland racing on both road and track.
