RESIDENTS across Derry are being warned by police to be on their guard against bogus emails purporting to be from the Tax Man offering a rebate.
The alarm has been raised after a night shift PSNI officer said he ” woke up to this email from ‘the tax man’ saying I was due some money back! – how exciting!!”
But there is only one snag – the tax man does not send out emails!!
“Though let’s not get our hopes up too much,” said the officer attached to C Section in Magherafelt PSNI.
“This is just another online scam known as a ‘phishing scam’.
“It is realistic at a quick glance or to someone very trusting.
“Don’t fall for any scams.
“Please don’t ever give out pin codes, passwords, sort codes, mothers maiden names or the name of your first pet (Lenny the Goldfish).
“Don’t reply to these type of emails or click on any links.
“If you’re really not sure, ask a friend or family member to have a look with you or call police on 101.”
The only saying is very apt: if it looks too good to be true, then it must be. There is no such thing as a free lunch.
