SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the loss of EU funding could have a disastrous impact on cancer research.
Ms Anderson said: “I visited Queen’s University this week to meet staff to discuss the potential impact of Brexit and it is clear that there is great deal of concern.
“The global research initiatives at Queen’s have benefitted from EU funds which have supported excellent research projects.
“During the visit I was shown a piece of medical equipment, developed at Queen;s, which is assisting in reducing rates of secondary surgery following breast cancer.
“Such vital research could be jeopardised by any loss of key EU research funding.
“It is not only the people of the North who would lose out if funding for cancer research projects is lost but cancer patients all across the world.
“The people of the North voted to the remain in the EU and the British government should respect and recognise that,” she added.
