DERRY’S Aileen Reid claimed a 21st-place finish in the triathlon as Gwen Jorgensen of the United States dethroned 2012 Olympic champion Nicola Spirig at Rio 2016.
Reid was in 31st place after the 1.5km swim, 19.19 seconds behind Spain’s Carolina Routier, who led the way after the first discipline.
The 34-year-old was 35th after the 38.48km bike race, three minutes and 23 seconds behind overall leader Lisa Norden of Sweden.
Aileen ultimately finished in 21st place after the 10km swim, four minutes and 58 seconds behind Gwen Jorgensen.
Spirig, who took a break from the sport after London to have a baby, exchanged cross words about who would lead in the run with Jorgensen.
But she proved no match for that rival in the closing stags as she had to settle for second.
Vicky Holland of Britain out sprinted best friend and housemate Non Stanford to win bronze.
Aileen now plans to leave Ireland and move to Australia’s Gold Coast.
