THE PSNI have used social media to trumpet the sprinting techniques of officers in chasing down a wanted suspect.
The police claim (tongue-in-cheek) that officers smashed Usain Bolt’s 100 metres world record to catch the runaway criminal during a chase over fences through Galliagh and Shantallow.
In a posting on Facebook, PSNI Foyle say: “The Olympics may be over but it didn’t stop local officers 👮🏻 showcasing their athletic talents during the chase and arrest of a suspect yesterday evening in the Glenabbey area of Derry.
“Officers from local policing teams, the district support team, and Ballyarnett Neighbourhood Team ran👟cross-country 🏞 through Galligh/Shantallow, vaulting fences, with one officer claiming to have ran the final 100 metres, which ultimately cornered the suspect, in a time of 9.57 seconds (New World Record) 🏅 Usain Bolt⚡️Was not available for immediate comment.
“On a more serious note: the suspect was wanted for questioning in relation to serious offences such as Attempted GBH with Intent, Criminal Damage, Assault, Possession of an Offensive Weapon, Theft, and Breach of Bail.
“He is currently recovering from his second placed finish and “assisting” police with their enquiries.”
The posting has been greeted with a mixed response on social media.
Some have branded it as “lies”.
Others have praised police for their efforts in catching the teenager and also the wit in writing the Facebook post.
