A 46-year-old man has been arrested in the North West in connection with an investigation into a fatal gangland feud murder at a Dublin boxing match weigh-in earlier this year.
Officers from the PSNI’s Extradition Unit made the arrest in Strabane on Monday using a European Arrest Warrant held by the Republic.
The well known Strabane kneecapper – who now walks with the aid of a stick – was arrested on suspicion of murder and firearms offences.
He is due to appear at Belfast Recorder’s Court on Tuesday for a formal extradition hearing.
His home in Strabane has been searched a number of times by detectives from the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit.
Known locally as ‘Baldy’, the suspected hitman is wanted by Gardai investigating the murder of David Byrne.
The 33-year-old was shot dead in Dublin’s Regency Hotel on February 5.
Two other men were injured in the attack, which Irish police linked to a gangland feud in Dublin between the Hutch and Kinahan gangs.
The Strabane suspect was captured by photographers running away from the scene wearing a flat cap and holding a firearm in his hand.
