DETECTIVES have arrested a 22-year-old man has been arrested over police have described as a serious assault in Derry in the early hours of this morning.
Police say a man in his 20s is in a critical condition in Atlnagelvin Hospital after the attack.
The assault took place in the city’s Waterloo Street at around 12.45 am.
During follow up inquiries, a 22-year-old man was arrested a short time later under the Offences Against the Persons Act 1861.
Detectives from the PSNI’s Reactive and Organised Crime Branch at Strand Road have appealed for help.
Detective Constable Stephen Riddell said: “We are conducting enquiries and are requesting the public’s assistance to help determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should contact Detectives at Strand Road Station on 101 quoting reference number 78 of 11/09/16.
