SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has expressed his deep shock and sadness at the death of well-known Derry solicitor Thomas ‘Tucker’ Doherty who passed away yesterday after a short illness.
The Foyle MLA said:“It was with great shock and sadness that I heard of the untimely death of Thomas ‘Tucker’ Doherty.
“My thoughts and prayers, and those of my party, go out to all the Doherty family at this most difficult time.
“Thomas ‘Tucker’ Doherty was a great friend to the SDLP over many years. He was a constant support and source of advice to many of us.
“He was always generous. No matter the time of day or night, he was always there and always available. He will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace,”
SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan said also expressed his condolences to Mr Doherty’s family.
, “He was a lively, lovely man who cared far more than his wicked wise cracks let on.
“He was engaging and amusing but always there to serve with a natural readiness to help people.
“Tucker had a colourful, characterful manner but a caring spirit and helpful nature.
“He could tease people, ease problems and appeared to breeze through challenges.
“He loved the argument but was never dismissive of anyone – with his ability to be hard-headed and warm-hearted at the same time.
“His family’s sense of loss and shock will be shared by his professional colleagues, his wide circle of friends and the many people who have benefited from his service and advice.
“Tucker had a renowned sense of humour but will also be remembered for his sense of honour which marked his regard for others – extending to his love for Derry and the North West and a canny political outlook.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his wife Helena, children Daniel and Aoife, brothers and sisters, and wider family at this very sad time.”
