CITY of Derry airport has announced the shocking news that Ryanair is stopping its London Stansted service from March next year 25.
The airline’s flights to Liverpool from the airport are being cut from six to two a week.
And the budget airline’s popular Faro flights are also being ceased from April.
The airport said it was “extremely disappointing news”.
Chief Executive of Derry City and Strabane District Council John Kelpie said the airport was in discussions with another operator about a twice-daily service to a London airport.
The news was announced as anxious staff were to hold talks with management about the airports future.
SDLP leader Colum Eastwood described the news as “disappaointing”.
The Foyle MLA tweeted: “Time for Executive and Dublin Government to step in.
“Regional airports should be supported.”
Last week City of Derry Airport chairman, Roy Devine, told local councillors the airport would not break even until 2021/22.
He said it would be at least five years before the airport would break even.
In August, Ryanair announced it was to reduce the number of flights it operates from City of Derry Airport to London Stansted.
From 30 October, the Irish airline will cut its daily service and instead operate six flights per week.
Now it has decided to end the service from March next year.
The Derry airport is currently running at a £2.145m loss per year, paid for by local ratepayers.
