SINN Féin Councillor Tony Hassan has welcomed confirmation from the Communities Minister Paul Givan is to send the Housing Selection Scheme out to public consultation.
The party’s housing spokesperson said: “I welcome the fact the minister is sending the proposal out to public consultation.
“Sinn Féin have met with him on a number of occasions and stressed the need for the system to be reviewed.
“The current scheme is failing many people and intimidation points are being abused in order to secure housing.
“The present scheme is not fit for purpose; it does not recognise people suffering from domestic violence or anti-social behaviour.
“I would ask people from the broad housing sector, the Housing Executive and the voluntary housing sector to take part in the consultation to develop a housing selection scheme that is robust and fair,” he added.
