LEAVING EU WOULD DEVASTATE BORDER COMMUNITIES – MCCARTNEY

mccartney-border-brexitSINN Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney says that leaving the EU would devastate border communities.

He was speaking as party colleague Martin McGuinness will fly out to Brussels this week to brief EU leaders on the impact Brexit will have on the North of Ireland and border areas, particularly between Derry and Donegal.

Mr McCartney said: “The latest report from the Centre for Cross Border Studies has highlighted the devastating consequence being dragged out of the EU would have on border areas.

“Each day thousands of people cross the border to work, study, shop and go about their daily lives.

“Increasingly racist policies by British Tories hell bent on Brexit and borders would have a negative impact on every aspect of life in border areas.

“On Saturday we saw thousands of people from North and South gather at six locations along the border to take part in a protest organised by Border Communities Against Brexit to call for the Remain vote to be respected.

“The British and Irish governments must recognise, respect and give effect to the democratic views of the majority of people in the North who voted to remain in the EU,” added the Foyle MLA.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has announced that she plans to trigger Brexit from March next year.
