MAKE A DATE WITH DRACULA AT GUILDHALL ORGAN RECITALS

dracula-guildhallMAKE a date with Dracula when he performs at the Guildhall, Derry, for a series of free 15-minute Gothic organ recitals over the Hallowe’en celebrations.

The recitals are part of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s City of Bones Hallowe’en celebrations.

They feature the acclaimed organist Stewart Smith who will don his Dracula guise to perform a programme of works that will include Liszt’s Fantastia and Fugue based on Bach on Sunday 30 October at 6.30pm; 7pm; 7.30pm and 8pm.

Encouraging the public to come along and be part of these unique performances, Michelle Murray Visitor Services Manager with the Council says last year’s event was a huge success and she is delighted to see it return as part of this year’s Hallowe’en celebrations at the Guildhall.

The Guildhall organ has literally been through the wars during its 100 year history.

The organ – the second to be fitted in the Guildhall since it opened in 1890 – was designed by Sir William Paratt, organist of St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

It was badly damaged when the Guildhall was twice bombed in 1972, and rebuilt by Hill, Norman and Beard Ltd of London at a cost of £68,000 in 1978.

The large instrument with its 3,132 pipes underwent restoration as part of major refurbishment of the Guildhall in 2013 when it became damaged again and required further work to put it back in pristine condition.

The newly-restored organ pipes feature intricate 23-carat Italian gold leaf and an acorn design.

Michelle Murray says the Gothic organ recitals is a unique opportunity for the public to come to the Guildhall and hear the organ for a series of free recitals.

“We are encouraging the public to make a date with Dracula and come along to the Guildhall on Sunday evening 30 October and be part of these unique performances.

“It promises to be a very spooktacular occasion and a unique chance to hear the organ being performed by one olf Ireland’s most well known accompanists.”

All performances are free and non-alcoholic Spooky Bunch will be available on the night.

The performances are scheduled for Sunday 30 October at 6.30pm, 7.00pm, 7.30pm and 8.00pm.
