AS part of Palliative Care Week the Western Trust in partnership with the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care and other palliative care service providers across the Trust area held a very successful ‘Choice and Planning with a Life Limiting Illness – what matters?’ event in the Silverbirch Hotel, Omagh on 12 October 2016.
Approximately one hundred people attended the event which included people with life limiting illness, their carers and family members and health and social care professionals with an interest in palliative care.
Alan Corry-Finn, Western Trust Director of Older Peoples Services and Chairman of the Western Trust Palliative Care Locality Board said: “We are delighted that so many people from across the Western Trust area took the time to attend today’s event.
“This event brought health care professionals, palliative care organisations, patients, carers and their families together to focus on considering choices and planning for future care, wishes and preferences on what is important to people especially toward end of life care.
“The event also highlighted services, support and resources available in the Western Trust area and outlined the key priorities for palliative and end of life care in Northern Ireland for the benefit of patients, carers and their families.
Alan added: “During the eventattendees heard from a service user who spoke about her experience of the death of both her parents and the stark contrast between when an individual and their family have discussed their end of life wishes and when they have not.
“This was a very useful insight into the real life experience of families.”
