PARK wardens in Derry have been issued with body cameras in an effort to tackle anti-social behaviour in the city.
The cameras will be used by staff who may be likely to encounter underage drinking, vandalism and abusive behaviour in park areas.
Derry City and Strabane District Council said they will be part of the wardens’ personal protective equipment.
The cameras are said to be similar to ones used by the PSNI.
Last Monday, a play park in Creggan was closed after being vandalised.
Rubber matting was damaged and rubbish was strewn across Ballymagowan Park over the weekend.
Sinn Féin councillor Kevin Campbell appealed to local parents to talk to their children.
“The play park has been closed by Apex housing association on the grounds of health and safety.
“Until they get these problems rectified, I am appealing to parents to have a conversation with your children around vandalism of the park,” he said.
It is hoped the cameras worn by wardens will result in “a better park experience for all users”.
The council said they would work in tandem with a “more visible ranger presence” including branded park vehicles and increased patrolling.
