SDLP Councillor Tina Gardiner has called for Derry to be home to a diverse display of Christmas signs in the run up to the festive period.
Cllr Gardiner was speaking after a meeting where SDLP councillors backed Christmas signs appearing throughout Derry and Strabane in Irish and other languages following an assessment of logistics, costs and equality impact.
She said: “As we begin the run up to the festive season, the SDLP wants to emphasise Derry’s place as one of the most welcoming, creative and diverse cities on these islands.
“It would be great if we could see Christmas signage appear not only in English but in Irish and Ulster Scots.
“That would send a great message of support to the diverse range of people living, working, visiting and celebrating Christmas in our city.
“That’s why we proposed a logistics, cost and equality impact assessment for new diverse signs in the city this year.
“When the council has the full information about the positive impact this can have on trade and equality in our city, there should be no delay or impediment in making this happen.
“We look forward to making Christmas an even better time for traders, residents and visitors to the city,” added Cllr Gardiner.
