MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock, hosted a special reception for Jason Smyth at the Guildhall on last night, Wednesday, November 3, to mark the Eglinton sprinter’s recent success at the Paralympic Games in Brazil.
His first place finish in the Men’s 100m T13 Final at the Olympic Stadium in Rio was his fifth Paralympic gold medal following his 100m and 200m success at the Beijing and London games.
“I was delighted to welcome Jason and his family to the Guildhall this week and honour his remarkable achievement in retaining his Paralympic title for a second time,” said Alderman McClintock.
“Jason has been putting local athletics on the international map for several years now and has been a great ambassador for our region as he competes across the globe.
“The fact that he has stayed at the top of his game for so long is a testament to his dedication and professionalism and he is a great role model for any young person in the City and District aiming to fulfil their potential in their chosen sport.”
