MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council Alderman Hilary McClintock has welcomed proposals by Minister Paul Givan MLA to create a high quality public realm scheme.
The scheme aims to improve and enhance the visual character of the Nailor’s Row streetscape and surrounding environs.
Earlier this week the Minister announced details of over £608,000 towards the scheme which is being developed in conjunction with Apex Housing Association who are also contributing £42,000 towards the project.
Improvements will include the replacement of paving with a high quality surface material, new street lighting and planting of trees and bedding plants.
The installation of both fixed and retractable bollards will also restrict car parking and improve accessibility for emergency services.
Welcoming the announcement the Mayor said: “Nailors Row is a visually prominent streetscape located within an important historical setting adjacent to the City Walls and within the Walled City Conservation Area.
“Therefore schemes which place an emphasis on good urban design and use of quality/sympathetic materials are to be welcomed in this context.”
Works are expected to commence in January 2017 and be completed by May 2017.
