THE PSNI say it carried out a successful operation to detect defective vehicles in Co Derry at the wseekend.
A spokesperson said: “On Sunday, November 6, Magherafelt Neighbourhood Policing Team undertook a joint operation with DVA.
“The operation was looking at vehicle nuisance, anti-social driving and vehicle defects.
“Within the area of Magherafelt we inspected 26 vehicles. These vehicles were selected for inspection after a filtering process.
“Of the 26 vehicles inspected:
- 26 vehicles received paperwork of some variety including suspension defects, lack of visibility and defective tyres.
- 18 of the vehicles received Defect Notices while the remaining 8 vehicles were of a more serious nature and received Prohibition Notices
- 7 of the drivers of these vehicles received Fixed Penalty Notices with 10 Fixed Penalty Notices issued in total.
- 1 vehicles seized under the Customs and Excise Management Act (NI) 1979 for using rebated fuel.
- Some of the vehicles inspected were deemed to be in a dangerous condition
The police spokesperson added: “It was a very successful operation that has protected the safety of not only the drivers of these vehicles but other road users.
“Coming into the winter months when road conditions can be more dangerous it’s really important to ensure that your vehicle is suitable for the road.
“Check your tyres, make sure your lights are all working and in frosty conditions make sure your windscreen is clear before you set off on your journey.”
