Derry’s James McClean the hero as his super strike beats Austria 1-0 in Vienna

CREGGAN’S James McClean was the hero in Vienna this evening after a wonderful left foot strike propelled the Republic to the top of the World Cup qualifying group.

A break from the back led to McClean going in one-on-one on the keeper.

And with a swish of his left boot, McClean fired the ball through the keeper’s legs and into the back of the net.

McClean could have had a brace in the second half but his right-footed strike sailed past the upright.

His goal was his third in two games for the West Brom winger who recovered from injury earlier in the week to make it into the starting 11.

It was a great night for North West footballers

The ever reliable Seamus Coleman led the Republic of Ireland line to another famous victory tonight – their first against Austria in Vienna.

The 28 year old Killybegs man put in a huge shift as the Boys in Green beat Austria 1-0.

Martin O’Neill’s team have now secured a brilliant ten points from their first four games in this World Cup Qualifying Campaign.

Coleman, who was being scouted by Man Utd during this game, immediately paid tribute to the 3,500 travelling Irish fans.

“The lads were brilliant tonight and I have said it before that’s it a pure privilege playing beside these guys because they give it their all every time.

“They were amazing tonight and so were the fans,” he said.

The Donegal man also heaped praise on his team-mates including McClean and Jonathan Walters.

The win now puts the Republic top of their group on ten points.

It is huge win and they now have an international break until their next game in March.

But the hero of the night was James McClean who has shown his full potential in a green shirt for the Republic yet again.

Well done James!
